Regeneration and Sustainability

Para la Naturaleza is dedicated to supporting agricultural models that regenerate soil and advance farming systems that are harmonious with nature. Recognizing food security as one of Puerto Rico’s paramount challenges, we acknowledge the pivotal role agricultural models play in environmental preservation.

In 2019, with the aid of an initial Global Grant from Rotary, Para la Naturaleza initiated the Agroecology Program. This program aims to equip farmers and communities with resources while advocating for food sovereignty through education, economic backing, and the distribution of seeds and trees. Our efforts have primarily centered on advocating for small-scale organic production and fostering community-based agriculture and self-sufficiency.

In April 2024, Cadre Wade Nomura from Rotary International revisited the island to evaluate the second Global Grant bestowed in 2022 by the organization and its local chapters. With this grant, we continued to champion agroecological innovations, contributing to Puerto Rico’s agricultural autonomy and food security. We provided tailored training to over 500 farmers and community gardeners in regenerative farming, offered technical assistance to enhance agroecological farming methods and innovation, facilitated the production of high-quality root crop seeds for distribution, and extended economic support to key food system stakeholders, including farmers, collectives, processors, distributors, and system-strengthening projects. We are pleased to announce the successful completion of this grant.

Help us protect nature and ecosystems on the islands of Puerto Rico.
